The Significance of Three-Month Planning

If you, like many of us, have attempted to set New Years resolutions by setting goals for a year, only to forget about them two month into the year, then this type of planning is for you.

Research has shown that 80% of people abandon and never reach their new year resolutions. The problem is not the people, but the approach that people take towards goal planning.

Long term planning almost never works. Think back through your planning journey.  When was the last time you set a long term goal and achieved it on time? If you ever did, you are definitely in the minority. Most of us mortals always have something come up, that either distracts us from the goals or takes us in a completely different path.

Using the shorter intervals of thirteen weeks (three months) you set a specific deadline that is a short time away for goal achievement.

At the end of the three months you will reevaluate the goals and readjust the steps to continue on the journey to greatness.  At the end of the three months you can also reevaluate to determine if you still want to pursue the goal. It is your goal in the end, and therefore, you can determine whether or not you want to continue. You will save yourself much time and headaches by cutting out some goals early on.  You can focus on the goals most meaningful to you, rather than pursuing something that no longer fits your personal mission objective.

The Significance of Three-Week Intervals

To make your three-month goals achievable, the key is to break them into manageable three-week increments.

This method mirrors the Agile Framework or Scrum, commonly used in software development. By focusing on smaller, independent intervals, it becomes easier to make steady progress while staying adaptable to change.

At its heart, this approach is about mastering the art of breaking a big goal into smaller, actionable steps. When studying great historical figures, this same strategy emerges as a cornerstone of their success—consistently tackling challenges one piece at a time.

This method fosters continuous learning and encourages finding better ways to achieve your objectives. Though popularized in modern software development, it’s a timeless strategy that has empowered people for millennia to turn their dreams into reality, one step at a time.
